It is also known as Baqi al-Gharqad, and it is a significant Islamic site in the Hejazi region.

This cemetery contains the treasures of the Holy Prophet Muhammad’s (PBUH) family members as well as a number of companions. This memorial, also known as the Garden of Heaven, is the city’s largest and contains at least 10,000 graves of the companions of the Holy Prophet Muhammad (PBUH). This cemetery covers an area of 175,000 m2.

It is well known that the Holy Prophet Muhammad (PBUH) used to pray inside the cemetery and attend funerals. It is also said that he performed the funeral prayer for Abyssian King Najashi around the year 8 AH. According to the Holy Prophet Muhammad PBUH, a light will shine forth from this cemetery, illuminating the heavens and the Earth.

History of Jannatul Baqi

When Holy Prophet Muhammad (PBUH) arrived in Madinah in September 622 CE, the land of Al-Baqi was densely forested with Arabian boxthorns. According to historical records, many houses in Madinah were built near this land after the Prophet Muhammad (PBUH) arrived in the city. The area was cleared and turned into a public cemetery for Madinah’s Muslims.

As’ad ibn Zurarah, one of the Holy Prophet Muhammad’s (PBUH) companions, died while the Prophet’s Mosque was being built. The Holy Prophet chose this land as a burial ground, and As’ad was the first to be buried there. The Prophet Muhammad’s (PBUH) daughter Ruqayaah was also buried here. She was the first of many of the Holy Prophet’s relatives buried here. In addition, Uthman bin Maz’oon was the Prophet’s first Muhajirun companion to be buried here.

The Prophet’s daughter Fatima, his uncle Abbas ibn ‘Abd al Muttalib, and Hussain’s great-grandson Al-Hasan ibn Ali ibn Abi Talib and the Holy Prophet’s great-grandson Ali ibn Hasain Zayn al Abidin all are buried there. It is one of the most important places to visit in Madinah because it is the final resting place of many pious souls.

Jannatul Baqi is being demolished.

Jannatul Baqi was demolished in 1806 and rebuilt in the mid-nineteenth century before being demolished again in 1925 or 1926. According to reports, the sites were demolished in both cases on the orders of Wahhabi followers (an Islamic revivalist movement within Sunni Islam). Prior to the first demolition, the House of Saud (Wahhabism) was demolishing religious structures such as mosques and tombs. In accordance with its doctrine, it destroyed the cemetery.

When the House of Saud regained control of the region in 1924 or 1925. Abdulaziz bin Abdul Rahman Al Saud (founder of Saudi Arabia) authorized the site’s destruction under the religious authorization of Qadi (judge of Sharia court). It obliterated even the most unassuming gravestones on the site.
