Schools have experienced the menace of limited parking space. The number of accessible parking spaces has remained constant over time while the number of vehicle owners grows constantly. Such an unequal ration has resulted in the competition for space in school.
The schools’ enrolment has grown tremendously almost in every university. Most of the students today prefer personal cars bought for them by their parents to public means of transport. Given that the administrative staff members have cars, parking reserves must be extended; in addition, students have complicated the matter as they also need to park before going for classes. They also need space to park their vehicles. Since the cars are expensive, they cannot accept parking them in the streets or places far from the school since they may be vandalized or stolen. With the growing number of individuals accessing the school, it is anticipated that the situation will become even worse in the future.
During formal events such as visiting days or academic days, the problem aggravates to congestion issue as the parking place barely accommodates vehicles of students, parents, staff, and other officials from the government. The dilemma in school looks so complex that the solution may not be found soon. The number of students who need parking services increases but the actions to extend parking through redesigning the infrastructural set-up of the school are hardly taking place. The parking fees are also high. The neighboring communities will soon start feeling the pressure of traffic congestion in the school as students and parents who come to school during working hours for various reasons may be forced to park their vehicles in the neighborhoods.
The minimal usage of bus services that previously served to pick and drop students contributes to the growth of the issue. Most parents today prefer taking their children to school. Other parents decided to buy cars for their children. The two categories of parents have different reasons for their choices; however, they have created a problem unknowingly. The solution to the situation can still be found. There should be proper traffic control units within the school’s management ensuring that the parking lots are designed appropriately with enough space for all the visitors. The busing system should be strengthened so that instead of students coming with personal cars or parents dropping and picking their children daily, the bus will bring students to school. This way, the parking will be used by the school staff and visitors hence dealing with congestion.
In conclusion, parking opportunities have become limited in the school. The situation is worsened by students coming to school on personal cars. Others are brought and picked by their parents hence creating competition for parking lots. The problem is growing and is likely to degenerate congestion.
