PlayStation Plus has always been a good deal because it lets you play online, gives you free games every month, and much more. And while you could always expect new games like Ghost of Tsushima to be added to PS Plus, the recent change to include the Extra and Premium Tiers has added many classic games to the lineup.
Some of these can be downloaded and played right away, while others can only be streamed. It’s a great chance to play old favourites that have never been remade or remastered. These are some of the best PS2 games you can get right now.
Dark Cloud 2
Dark Cloud 2 is the sequel to the well-reviewed Dark Cloud, but it is different in many ways. First, the Invention System adds a twist to the traditional JRPG system of looking for new items. Instead of looking for new weapons, you make them yourself. With this system, you can make a huge number of different things.
Dark Cloud 2 has more than 100 hours of gameplay, and it now has a Trophy system and uprendering to make it look just as good as it did when it came out years ago. It comes with a PS Plus Premium subscription, but if you don’t want to pay for a subscription, you can buy it for $14.99.
Shadow of the Colossus
Shadow of the Colossus comes from the same team that made Ico, which is one of the most well-known PlayStation 2 games. Even though there isn’t much dialogue in the game, the story is amazing. Instead, the atmosphere tells the story: it’s a broken-down kingdom inhabited by huge creatures that are both beautiful and dangerous. Your goal is to kill the creatures by any means necessary. Usually, you have to move around them to get to their weak spots while they do everything they can to get rid of you.
Shadow of the Colossus was a game like nothing else that had been made before it, and many other games have been influenced by it. It’s worth going back to now, especially if you think video games are art in their own right. Shadow of the Colossus is a big part of what made The Last Guardian what it is.
Final Fantasy X
Even though the Final Fantasy series has always been popular, the success of Final Fantasy X and the PlayStation 2 took it to a whole new level. As part of the PlayStation Plus Extra tier, you can play both Final Fantasy X and Final Fantasy X-2. Even though this is an updated version of the game for the PS4, it still has the same feel as the PS2 version. It just looks better.
As Tidus, you can look around the world and use the Sphere Grid, which is one of the best ways to level up in the Final Fantasy series, as you try to beat Sin. It’s an emotional story with really great music. You can also play the original Final Fantasy VII as part of the PS Plus Extra tier if FFX isn’t your favourite.
Rogue Galaxy
Space pirates, graphics that look like anime, and an open world? Rogue Galaxy is a lot like Treasure Planet: the Game, and it’s a great game. It might have a lot to do with Dark Cloud. A lot of people say that Rogue Galaxy is the finished version of Dark Cloud 3.
Rogue Galaxy is a must-play if you like JRPGs that try new things. Combat happens in real time, and there’s no waiting for the game to load between exploring and fighting. Everything flows smoothly from one to the next, and in many ways, the Revelation Flow system is like the Sphere Grid. Oh, and because it looks like a cartoon, it’s a unique experience that holds up much better over time than games with more polygons.
Jak Trilogy
This one is a little bit of a cheat, since it includes more than one game, but no self-respecting gamer should miss out on Jak and Daxter and the games that came after them. They came out in the early 2000s, when mascot platformers were all the rage, and they are some of the best Sony-only games. You won’t be able to find this game on Xbox Game Pass.
In the Jak Trilogy, an elf-like creature named Jak tries to fix an experiment that went wrong with his best friend and turned him into a small weasel. All three are a good way to spend a weekend. They are a mix of puzzle games and sci-fi action games.
Devil May Cry
From Batman to Miles Morales, all of your favourite action games owe a lot to the first ones. The Devil May Cry series was one of the first modern action games. It was unlike anything that had come before it and was full of fast-paced gunplay and exploration. You play as the demon hunter Dante as he fights hordes of demons and gets over some serious daddy issues.
The Devil May Cry collection on PlayStation Plus has the first three games. Each game takes about seven hours, but you’ll have a great time playing them. Pun intended. Wild Arms 3
Wild Arms has always been a bit of an outlier, a cult classic RPG in a sea of much more popular RPGs. It takes place on a desert planet and has western themes, so if you want a break from the usual fantasy, this is a great choice. The map is one of the unique parts. Instead of opening up as you move to new places, you have to ask and search using the GPS that is built in.
Slope Game has a deep and interesting story that you can explore over the 30.5-hour main story, but if you try to do everything, you can expect to play for more than 50 hours. Check this one out if you like RPGs.
Even though the PlayStation 2 didn’t have a lot of independent games, it did have a huge number of blockbuster games that are hard to find in games today. The good news is that with the new PS Plus tiers, you can play all of them on your PlayStation 5, and you should take advantage of this.
