Why Use Ceramic Membranes in industries?

As per the reports, about 7 billion people in the world do not get clean water. The importance and demand for treated water and reuse is rising. To achieve the goal of providing only pure water to the people, advanced technologies have been used for Sewage Water Treatment and recovery of wastewater.

What are ceramic membranes?

Ceramic membranes are artificial membranes that are made from inorganic materials like alumina, silicon carbide, titania, zirconia oxides, etc. These membranes are used for liquid filtration.

Ceramic membranes can be either dense or porous.

The use of Ceramic Membranes

Here, we summarize its uses.

  • The membrane uses a barrier layer that allows only water to pass through and prevents other components from going through the filtrate. In micro filtration and ultra filtration, the pores in the polymer let the water pass the barrier and avoid the passage particles larger than the pores.
  • In Reverse osmosis, the barrier layers do not have pores, but it lets the water diffuse through the barrier layer and prevents the dissolved ions.
  • Due to the favorable properties of Ceramic membrane, unlike polymeric membranes, they can be used in separations that involve aggressive media such as acids, solvents, etc.
  • In the membranes, the heat does not affect the separations, and the water components do not suffer thermal degradation. It ensures cold sterilization of beverages, pharmaceuticals, and milk.
  • Due to its excellent thermal stability, it can be used under high-temperature conditions.
  • When the water available to an industrial facility is not fit for the application, then membranes are used to improve the quality of the water and make the process run.
  • Sometimes, the discharge in the processes is too much, and the membrane is used for its reduction.
  • Also, when the concentration of the solution is not how it should be, and the industry is looking for efficient ways to adjust the concentration, then using ceramic membranes seems to be the best thing.
  • The membranes are also used in Membrane Bioreactors or MBR for waste treatment in food and dairy, pharmaceutical, etc.

In a nutshell, the Ceramic membrane finds its applications in the following industries:

  • Bottled Water
  • Beer, wine, and other alcoholic beverages
  • Fruit juices and maple syrup
  • Petroleum refining
  • Paint, adhesive, and solvent recovery
  • Production of Milk and cheese
  • Clarification of biochemical processes
  • Semiconductor, boiler feed, power, etc.
  • Gold, uranium, other precious metals recovery
  • Landfill leach ate reduction
  • Mining and Metal Processes
  • Plating processes

Membrane products are used for producing potable water. The membrane technology is being used in several industrial applications around the world like Ceramic Membrane for oil Water separation. Since membranes are able to achieve separations without causing a change in the phase and heat, it is advantageous for many applications.
